My BSFL Bin Got Raided By A Possum
Просмотров 638Месяц назад
I usually prop my BSFL bin lid open, at the beginning of the season, a few inches to let out more odor to attract the adult soldier flies. I had also begun adding food waste to the bin to increase the smell to bring in the flies. However, a possum let himself in and cleaned out the bin. Wouldn't it be useful to get natural CO2 into a mix, or would that be to acidic in contact with water? How about nitrogen, is there a natural way to get that out of the mixture (ammonia, isn't that even caustic, to match the concrete pH)?

Maybe ozone + ammonia+ magnesium copper? "Ozone has been widely used in water treatment of various types of water. It can react quickly with organic pollutants, containing double bonds, aromatic groups, or amino groups [4]. In addition, ozone decomposes and generates hydroxyl radicals (•OH) in water. Hydroxyl radicals were considered to be the strongest oxidant in water and enhance the oxidation ability during ozonation [5]. However, ozonation for ammonia removal was regarded to have several deficiencies. First of all, ammonia mainly exists in the form of NH4+ under neutral conditions which were proved to have little reactivity with O3 and •OH [6], [7]. To improve ammonia removal performance, pH has to be maintained above 9.0 or higher during the ozonation process. Furthermore, the ozonation product is mostly nitrate. It means that the ozonation of ammonia requires alkaline conditions, and the total nitrogen removal efficiency is extremely low. In addition, the products formed by ozonation of ammonia nitrogen contain H+ ions, causing the acidification of the solution. For example, Khuntia [8] reported ammonia removal by ozone microbubbles and the oxidation rate of ammonia decreased obviously due to solution acidification as the reaction progressed. Therefore, the altered pH would lower the reaction process and make the mechanism more confusing to be declared. In order to improve the performance of above chemical oxidation reactions for ammonia (as well as total nitrogen) removal, some catalysts naturally come into people's vision. Ichikawa [9] reported that Co3O4 showed high selectivity to gaseous products. Chen [10] synthesized a series of catalysts with various MgO-Co3O4 molar ratios. And the highest catalytic performance at the Mg-Co mole ratio of 8:2 was detected, which removed 85.2% ammonia in 2 h and the proportion of gaseous nitrogen in the product was 44.8%. Liu modified NiO by surfactants [11], [12], which showed high catalytic activity and about 76% ammonia was claimed to convert to gaseous nitrogen. However, solution acidification inevitably occurred in all the above catalytic processes and resulting a series of complex changes in the types of oxidants and the existing forms of ammonia. No buffer was used to control pH in the above studies since common buffer components such as phosphate and carbonate were thought to have high affinity towards certain active catalytic sites that might block catalytic centers and work as poisons of catalysts [13]. The problem is that the heterogeneous catalytic system is too complex since it is difficult to distinguish whether the disturbance of reaction rate was caused by the change of pH or the interaction between catalytic and substrates. Moreover, catalysts involvement and declined pH during ozonation complexly altered oxidant forms involved, which made it more challenging to elucidate the mechanism of ammonia ozonation. Hence, although several so-called high-performance catalysts were reported, proper mechanisms involved in the degradation process of ammonia by ozone still lagged far behind ozonation utility."

You never use a shop rag to clean up metal shavings. Use something like a small paintbrush or dust brush. Disposable paper towel. Metal shavings left behind in the shop towel after going to laundry or cleaning or using the shop towel on your bare hands can cut your skin.

Thanks again for another DIY Rocket Stove project. However, it seemed very inefficient. So much wood, to heat up a few litres of water to a boil for 5 minutes. A cover would have help but still. I guess the very principle of a Rocket Stove makes it great in a camping situation, but not so much when cooking day after day for a family.

Another way to cook the eggs is to steam them. You would need to add a steamer basket and lid. Add water to bottom of steamer. Add eggs and cover. Steam 15 minutes. Cold ice bath. Done. Less energy use. I really need to try your rocket!

Great tutorial/DIY experiment! I appreciate you learning as you go and showing us the little things. Now what brings me here is I've missed having a fire pit for years, but I have two steel containers with handles from Home Depot about 3' diameter at the opening that narrows maybe 10 degrees slope. I bought them ~6 years ago to try growing some peppers in a semi-mobile container, but I didn't have success with the one I tested as a planter, so I'm hoping to combine the two into a DIY smokeless socializing fire setup outside my apartment. As far as the physics goes, is the upper lip that bends inward and overlaps the inner diameter barrel crucial to the formula?
